Quantum of Solace is not as bad as people make it out to be
Its grown on me over time. When viewed as an epilogue of Casino Royale rather than a full fledged stand alone, its not bad. When I first saw it, I thought the whole plot hanging on water was dumb, but maybe not. Heck Michael Burry (from the big short) thinks water is the next big thing and that is what hes investing in. It moves along at a very quick pace, there is no filler. The bond girl's story (Montes) of losing her family and waiting for revenge fleshes out yet another Bond girl which is a nice change of pace from the other non Craig Bond movies. That General Medrano is one of the lowest vile villains in the series. The attempted rape scene is hard to watch. It was great to see agent Montes put him down. The action is fun, though feels a little too much like Bourne wannabe at times, but it fits with the Craig era. Mathis' death and his body being dumped in a dumpster felt almost like it foreshadows how Bond's life will end someday if he stays in the spy world. I thought Fields was a pointless character. The one major gripe I have is the very end when we see Vesper's loveboyfriend Yusuf - and now he has a canadian intelligence agent for a lover he's going to use.............the only problem is I don't buy it. The guy doesn't look like someone who could seduce someone like Vesper or that Canadian agent. I know its shallow, but i keep thinking "that dude? no way".
Prince Rainier III (1923-2005) Rainier’s mother, Princess Charlotte, was actually illegitimate. Her father Louis II, getting older and with no legitimate children, legitimized her and made her his heir. She never took the throne, and in fact renounced her rights to her son, Rainier, the day before his 21st birthday. Rainier became the Sovereign Prince of Monaco upon the death of his grandfather in 1949. During WW2, Rainier served in the Free French Army. During the 40s and 50s he was in a long term relationship with the French film actress Gisele Pascal. Rainier’s sister, Princess Antoinette, wanted her own son to ascend to the throne, and spread rumors that Pascal was infertile. The rumors along with her treatment by the press and public ended their relationship. After the war Monaco, a country who made its money primarily as a gambling origin, was in crisis as wealthy Europeans found their funds diminished after the war. To restore Monaco’s treasury Rainier decided to promote Monaco as a tax haven, and he personally took control of SBM (the company who owns the Monte Carlo Casino, Opera, and Hostel de Paris) in 1964. Prince Albert still retains a large share of the company and profits from it today. Marriage: Everyone knows this one. Rainier married American film star Grace Kelly in 1956. Their marriage is rumored to have been turbulent. It is said that Grace struggled with adjusting to royal life, regretted ending her film career, and that Rainier had extramarital affairs. Her children have stated that though she was a loving mother, they spent more time with nannies than with their parents. Grace's dress is iconic, but here you go if you want to revisit some photos from that day. Rainier smoked up to 60 cigarettes per day, and in the last years of his life his health steadily declined. On March 8th, 2005 he entered the hospital for a lung infection and by the end of the month he was on a ventilator suffering from renal and heart failure. On March 31st he officially announced his son Albert, as regent, and on April 6th he died. The Constitution Monaco’s constitution stated that Monaco is a constitutional monarchy ruled by the hereditary princes of the Grimaldi. If the reigning prince were to die without leaving a male heir, Monaco, according to the treaty, would be incorporated into France. In 2002, realizing he had a 43 year old bachelor son, Rainier amended the constitution to allow the crown to pass to his daughters should Albert not marry. Grace, Princess of Monaco (1929-1982) Grace was born in Philadelphia to an affluent and influential family. Her father was an Olympian and a Democratic nominee for Mayor of Philadelphia and was appointed by President Roosevelt as National Director of Physical Fitness. Her mother taught physical education at the University of Pennsylvania and coached women’s athletics at Penn. Her Uncle, George Kelly, was a Pulitzer prize winning dramatist, screenwriter, and director and used his influence to gain Grace admission to the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York. Grace became one of the biggest movie stars of her generation. In 1955 she was sent to the Cannes Film Festival and invited to appear in photos with Prince Rainier. After a year-long courtship, they were married in 1956. Grace was not allowed to continue her acting career after her marriage. She instead devoted herself to her role as Princess, become heavily involved with the Red Cross of Monaco and the Rainbow Children Coalition. On September 13, 1982, Kelly was driving back to Monaco after spending time at her country home. During the drive she had a stroke, lost control of her vehicle, and drove off the mountainside. She died a day later. An article on their relationship Prince Albert II (b. 1958) Prince Albert is one of the wealthiest royals in the world with a net worth at more than $1B. He attended Amherst College in Massachusetts, studying political science, economics, music, and English literature, and completed his education with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science. He toured Europe in 1979 as part of the Amherst College Glee Club. Albert competed in the bobsleigh for five consecutive Winter Olympics on behalf of Monaco, and was their flag bearer at the 1988, 1994, and 1998 Olympics. He is also a judo black belt. He became Prince of Monaco when his father died in 2005. Marriage: Prior to his marriage his status as a bachelor was a hot topic of discussion. He was known to date well-known fashion models and actresses, however at age 53 had never married. It was rumored that Albert was gay, something he expressed great frustration with in the press. In 2006 he attended the opening ceremony of the Torino Olympics with South African swimmer Charlene Wittstock. They were engaged in 2010, and married in 2011. There are rumors that Charlene tried to flee the country the day before their wedding. It is reported that the future bride, after discovering Albert may have fathered yet another child during their relationship, attempted to flee as many as three times before their wedding, however was always intercepted at the airport. It is also said she attempted to seek refuge at the South African embassy, and that officials in Monaco ended up hiding her passport so she could not leave the country. Moreover, during their wedding, Charlene openly cried at parts, and Prince Albert was caught on camera begging her to kiss him. Honestly, she looked pretty miserable the whole time. The palace has denied all of these claims. During their honeymoon, they stayed in separate hotels Here's everything you ever needed to know about their wedding Watch it Prince Albert is passionate about the environment and an avid sportsman. Prince Albert speaks French, English, German, and Italian. He speaks English with basically no accent thanks to his American mother. Illegitimate Children In 2005, the day before Prince Rainier died, Albert publicly acknowledged he had fathered a son out of wedlock. In 2006, he confirmed he had also fathered a daughter. These children were barred from the line of inheritance because of a 2002 constitutional amendment requiring an heir’s parents to be married. Alexandre (b. 2003) Alexandre’s mother (Nicole Coste) was a flight attendant for Air France and met Prince Albert when he was a passenger on a flight. He asked for her number, the beginning of a years-long affair. The relationship ended at the insistence of Prince Rainier. Albert visited Alexandre and Nicole often, however when he refused to acknowledge Alexandre publicly, Nicole sold an interview and pictures to the media. Albert was in mourning for his father and made no public comment, but later did acknowledge paternity. Alexandre and Nicole live in France at an estate given to them by Albert. Jazmin (b. 1992) Jazmin’s mother, Tamara, met Albert while working as a waitress. Albert knew of Jazmin and visited her, however did not acknowledge her publicly until she was in high school to protect her identity. In 2006 the French magazine Voici published photographs of Jazmin and her mother on a visit to Monaco, outing her as Albert’s daughter. She has attended events with Albert and Charlene, and is listed as a sponsor for her father’s royal foundation. An interview with Jazmin Princess Charlene (b. 1978) Born in Zimbabwe, Charlene’s family relocated to South Africa in 1989. She represented South Africa at the 2000 Sydney Olympics, finished fifth in the 4x100 meter relay. Albert and Charlene met at the Mare Nostrum swimming competition in Monaco in 2000, however were not seen together until 2006. Charlene converted to Roman Catholicism for her wedding, and has learned French and Monegasque after her move to Monaco. She is an ambassador for the Special Olympics, patron of the South African Red Cross, and is passionate about sport. In recent news, she completed “the crossing” water bike challenge, a 180 kilometer water bike race for charity. An interview with Charlene and Albert on the 1st birthday of their twins Albert and Charlene have 2 children: Hereditary Prince Jacques *twin* (b. 2014) Princess Gabriella *twin* (b. 2014) Gabriella was born 2 minutes before her brother, however because of the constitution her brother will inherit the throne. They are super sweet together and you see them at events often. Princess Caroline of Hanover (b. 1957) Caroline is the eldest child of Rainier and Grace Kelly, however because of the constitution her brother, Albert, sits on the throne of Monaco. She served as de facto first lady of Monaco until the marriage of Albert and Charlene. Until the birth of her niece and nephew she was heir presumptive to the throne, although she had only held that title since 2005 after the change of the constitution to include female heirs. Caroline received her French baccalaureat in 1974, and received a degree in Philosophy from Sorbonne University. She is fluent in French, English, Spanish, German, and Italian. Her hobbies include horseback riding, swimming, and skiing. Marriages:
Marriage 1: Philippe Junot
Married Phillippe, a Parisian banker, in 1978. The couple divorced in 1980 with no children.
Marriage 2: Stefano Casiraghi
Married Stefano in 1983, the sportsman heir to an Italian industrial fortune. The two had to marry in a civil ceremony rather than a religious ceremony because Caroline, a Catholic, was divorced. Caroline was 3 months pregnant at the time of their wedding. They have three children:
Note: The Casiraghi’s are all very beautiful and very fashionable but I don’t want to go much into them here because they are so far down the line of succession. They’re fun to follow for their fashion if you have the time to check them out.
Marriage 3: Prince Ernst August of Hanover
Married Ernst August, a Prince, in 1999. They have one daughter, Princess Alexandra. Caroline is thus a Princess twice-over, through her family and through her husband. She and Ernst August have been separated since 2009 however are still legally married, thus she retains the title of Princess Caroline of Hanover. Read about all of her weddings here See her speaking in English around 12:00 here Princess Stephanie (b. 1965) Stephanie was in the vehicle with her mother when Grace died. She suffered a fracture of the neck. She has studied classical dance and piano, and competed in gymnastics and horse riding. She interned at Christian Dior and debuted as a model in 1984. She has a swimwear and perfume line, and owns cafes and stores in both Monaco and Barcelona. She also has sold more than 2 million copies of her song, Ouragan, and sold 1.5M copies of her album Besoin. She recorded “In the Closet” with Michael Jackson, however is listed as “mystery girl” in the credits. Marriages/Relationships:
Marriage 1: Daniel Ducruet
Stephanie married her former body guard, Daniel Ducruet, in 1995. When Rainier learned of their relationship Daniel was not only still his employee, but had a pregnant girlfriend too. Stephanie gave birth to their two children “out of wedlock” because Rainier refused to grant permission for them to marry, however eventually relented. The two divorced a year later after Ducruet was photographed naked with a stripper. Read more They have two children:
Stephanie met elephant trainer (yeah, you read that right) when she presented him with the award for “best animal tamer” at the Monaco Circus Festival in 1997. Franco, a decade older than Stephanie, was married with two children at the time. Franco left his family for Stephanie, moving her and her three children into his circus caravan in Zurich. Marrying in 2001, their relationship lasted 18 months until their divorce. An interview with Stephanie in English in 1990 Why is he a Prince and not a King? From vogue: It goes back deep into the history of Monaco. Monaco has always been a tiny nation, and, for protection, allied itself with (or, at some points, was flat-out annexed by) big powerful countries, with big powerful rulers—aka kingdoms, or, a nation ruled by a king or queen. So Monaco’s rulers styled themselves as prince and princess. That, by definition, made the nation a principality, or one ruled by prince or princess. Regardless, Albert actually plays a bigger role in the day to day operations of the country than most of his European peers. Legislative power is divided between the Prince who initiates the laws, and the National Council who votes on them. Executive power is retained by the Prince, and he has full judiciary powers. Jewels See their tiara collection I think the Ocean Tiara, gifted to Charlene for her wedding, is particularly interesting. You either love it or you hate it. The Grimaldi Curse What do you think?
I have always been a Bond fan, but haven’t watched most of them since I was a kid. (Currently 31) I decided to watch them all in reverse order, but order within each Bond actors set of films. Meaning all Craig films in order then Brosnan and so on. I am watching one a day and just wrapped up Brosnan last night. Here are my rankings thus far. Casino Royale - 7.5 Tomorrow Never Dies - 7.4 Goldeneye - 7.3 The World is not Enough - 7.0 Skyfall - 6.4 Die Another Day - 6.3 Quantum of Solace - 6.0 Spectre - 5.9 I also joined this sub a few days ago and find it interesting how so many people on here refer to Craigs films as more grounded and realistic. I think they are just as outlandish as any other. Sometimes more so. I would say that the character is more brooding and full of self doubt in his films, but the films being grounded is a stretch too far. The Die Another Day hate seems to be a bit of an echo chamber within this sub. It’s a fine movie with a few cheesy, even by Bond standards, moments. Just comparing these two Bonds it’s a no brainer for me to pick Brosnan. Better actor, more depth to the character, he has the look, and wins pretty much across the board. In a perfect world we would have gotten Brosnan in Casino Royale. They could have consolidated the “too old for this shit” themes into a version of the character that’s really earned it. Tonight I jump into Dalton. In between Connery and Brosnan is where I have only seen them years ago when I was a kid. These next couple of Bonds should be fun.
I just finished a binge of all 24 movies over the last few months, with all but the Brosnan and Craig movies being new to me. Here are my thoughts
So, back in late May, I decided to start watching all of the James Bond movies from the start. A short backstory is that I grew up going to see the Brosnan Bond movies in the theater and have seen all of the Craig movies in the theater as well but never went back to watch any of the other Bonds. Now that I had the time to do it, I dived in, and it was GREAT! So, back when I started, I had an ongoing conversation with BossVicKoss after each movie even up until finishing Spectre last night. So I wanted to give him a shout out for guiding me through the movies. I won't go into so much detail since there are so many movies, but I'll give you my rank of all of the movies (just ranking them as I went, not trying to put too much thought into it, just how I felt right after watching each movie) as well as my rank and thoughts on each Bond. If you want to see my full comment on each film as I watched them. They are all in this thread: https://reddit.com/movies/comments/guqpey/how_the_birth_of_james_bond_and_dr_no_created_the/

Daniel Craig - He may not be the perfect Bond archetype, but to me he just plays the role perfectly. He keeps the class of Bond but also adds a chip on his shoulder. And bringing the films into modern times, I believe he's done a great job.
Timothy Dalton - This may be more controversial than my #1 pick, but Dalton brought a seriousness that was so lacking near the end of Moore's run. He still was suave but the stories were more personal. It's a shame that his run got cut short due to legal issues with the series.
Sean Connery - Just all around classic. He was great. But some of his movies started tk get a little too slapstick near the end. But his earlier movies were fantastic.
Pierce Brosnan - The everyman Bond. I grew up with Brosnan as Bond and to me now he was very good but not quite as great as the other three above him for me. Still awesome and I wish Die Another Day wasn't so cheesy.
Roger Moore - I know a lot of people love Roger Moore, and I do too. But in my opinion, he out stayed his welcome a bit. He certainly leaned way more into the comedy than any of the other Bonds and his movies as a whole were more miss than hit for me. But definitely still really good as Bond.
George Lazenby - the safe bet last pick. And while I think he was serviceable as Bond, he still just didn't have what the other 5 actors had. I do have to say though, I loved On Her Majesty's Secret Service. He may not have been the best Bond, but the movie was really good.
Anyway, I know this is a long post, but hopefully somebody out there enjoyed it. I'm sure some of my opinions won't be what most others think, especially longtime fans. And things could change as I watch them again. Honestly, I enjoyed all of them with the exception of A View To A Kill. That was the only movie I truly considered bad. Some had bad parts and some were just okay, but that was the only one that I didn't really enjoy to some extent.

A great movie, but not one without flaws. The biggest flaw that I found in the film was the Poker Tournament aspect of it. This is just my personal opinion, but I thought the Poker aspect of the film didn't really mesh well with the rest of the story and the world of James Bond. James Bond is known as a classy, suave secret agent; who gets to bang hot, rich women; drive +$100,000 cars; and go to parties/functions of the wealthy elite. In contrast, I've felt the game of no-limit texas hold'em to be, for lack of a better term, somewhat pedestrian and tacky. Texas Hold'em is the game we've played at our friends' houses or in dorms in college. It's not what I would call a classy game that the rich elite would partake in. I understand why the filmmakers would choose Texas Hold'em for the card game that Bond has to play. Hold'em was gaining in popularity in the early 2000s with the World Series of Poker on ESPN and Chris Moneymaker, an average dude, winning it in 2003. The game was becoming mainstream. Everyone started playing it, but the movie still felt that it had to explain the rules of the game and what was going on during the hands, which I felt weakened the game. Okay, the filmmakers saw the popularity of No Limit Texas Hold'em and wanted to put that into their movie. I don't agree, but it could have worked well, but it didn't. We're not shown in the movie that Bond is really good at poker. We're told he's a great gambler and can read people, but we're not shown that skill. Now, this isn't completely the filmmakers' fault. The nuances of Texas Hold'em aren't that exciting or easy to film. The game is less about the cards and more about how you can read people and pick up their tells. A great poker film to actually show the main character's ability is Rounders (1999) with Matt Damon. A scene where he's delivering some paperwork to a bunch of law professors and judges playing poker, and he's able to read their hands blind, shows the audience that Matt Damon is a great poker player without flat out telling us how good he is. The audience doesn't get that scene in Casino Royale. Yeah, he beats that guy in the beginning and takes his car, but he just got lucky. It doesn't really show us his skill, and since the Poker Tournament is just one aspect of the film and not the complete focus, I doubt they had the screentime available to properly set Bond up for being a great Poker player, so the movie has to flat out tell us he's great. We still don't really get the sense of that because during the actual Tournament we don't see how he wins all his money. He literally loses every hand until the last hand: the bad guy gets lucky on the river and beats him the first hand, but Bond learns his tell. The bad guy fucks with him and makes him lose his stake in the 2nd hand. He's poisoned and has to forfeit the 3rd hand, and finally wins on the final hand. We don't ever see him beat anyone on the table until the very end. That last hand everyone had a bunch of crazy cards. There's like 2 full houses, I think the bad guy has a four of a kind, and Bond himself gets a straight flush. You almost never see that in real poker. Again, the game itself is actually not all that exciting to watch, so the filmmakers probably felt they had to put all those crazy hands in to make it exciting. The movie despite its flaws is still a really good action film. I just feel that the Poker Tournament aspect was the weakest part and definitely could've been done better. They could've actually showed Bond using some skills to let the audience know he's actually a good pick to play the tournament on behalf of the British Government and not just straight up told that he's good. I wish they had picked a better card game to focus on, like Baccarat. I would've liked for the movie to have told me how to play Baccarat; since I'd never played it before. They didn't do that, though; and it's too bad.
8 years ago, in the leadup to the then new James Bond film, Skyfall, I watched and reviewed every Bond film (official and unofficial), in chronological order of release. With the latest Bond film, No Time to Die, on its way (optimistically next April) and it being the last film with Daniel Craig as Bond, I figured I would try watching all the films again to see how my opinion has changed in the past near-decade. There’s a slight tweak though. To make things a bit different, I will not be watching the films in chronological film release order but instead be watching it in order of release of the original Ian Fleming books that lends its title to each film. (The order of the films plus a deeply geeky explanation of where I have placed the later films that do not have Fleming titles can be found at the end of this post). Other minor tweaks are that, since I am no longer an unemployed 22 year old who could watch 4-5 films a week, I will aim for 1 film per week and skip the unofficial films. If No Time to Die does end up coming out in April next year (and that’s a very big if) then I should finish all the films just before its release, but we’ll see. So without further ado, the first film in this Bondathon is Casino Royale, Daniel Craig’s first Bond film from 2006. It’s been my favorite Bond film for a while but I also haven’t seen it in a few years so it’s a good one to start out with... It still holds up really well and went by much quicker than I thought, despite it being one of the longer films. The first third of the film establishes that we are watching a reckless Bond at the beginning of his career who needs to keep his ego in check, and also sets up why the villain needs to set up a poker game to win back money he lost. It’s a bit of a stretch but necessary for a faithful but modern adaptation of the novel. The poker scenes can obviously be confusing if you don’t know the rules but the film does its best to keep them relatively short, break it up with non poker scenes, and show the tension in the poker scenes so that you at least have a rough idea of who’s winning or losing. Bond’s relationship with Vesper is my favorite part of this film, and that’s saying something considering some very impressive action scenes (parkour chase in Madagascar, Bond stopping a terrorist attack at an airport, the finale in the sinking house in Venice). Back in the late 90s/early 2000s the trend for Bond films was to star actresses that have box office pull (especially in America) but questionable talent like Teri Hatcher, Denise Richards or Halle Berry. In contrast, Eva Green, while talented and respected, was a relative unknown back in 2006, but her portrayal of Vesper put her on the map and made her the household name today. Her scenes with Craig’s Bond are always quick witted and it’s easy to see why Bond would fall in love with her. The dialogue does get a bit cheesy towards the end but overall she’s one of the most memorable characters in all of Bond. I absolutely love the music in this film, even though the Bond theme isn’t that present. As this is Bond’s first mission and reboots/origin stories were all the rage in the mid/late 2000s (see Batman Begins, Star Trek, and X Men First Class a bit later on), we see Bond at the start of his career and picking up nuggets of what makes him Bond throughout the film, winning poker, getting his Aston Martin DB5, disobeying M to go with his instincts, until the very end of the film where we finally hear him introduce himself in his iconic way, and that’s when we hear a bombastic rendition of the film in full. It’s funny to see what was considered advanced technology in 2006, just a year or so before the smartphone era. Bond has a Sony Ericsson phone with a very primitive version of a GPS, and snoops through a hotel’s security footage after going through a number of blu-ray discs. That’s always a danger with putting technology in films in this day and age when everything becomes obsolete almost immediately, but in this movie it’s few and far in between and is more of a gentle reminder of how long it’s been since Daniel Craig’s first Bond film rather than any distraction. Ironically, despite this being “Bond begins” and missing elements like the Bond theme, Q, Moneypenny, it ends up being the only Daniel Craig film where Bond gets sent by M to go on a regular mission. It’s all “Bond goes rogue” or “This time it’s personal” after this as far as the Craig films go. Overall, Casino Royale still holds up as perhaps my favorite Bond film (we’ll see how it fares after I’ve viewed all the other). It’s gritty, it’s tense, it’s emotional. It’s Bond without following all the Bond tropes. ***Deep geek zone: Order of films I'll be watching and explanation of where I have placed the non-Fleming titles Basically I have scattered the 6 movies whose titles are not from the Fleming books throughout the list, mainly putting them after a Fleming title whose book/film with a similar theme or element, with the one exception of Skyfall which I just placed in the middle of 4 Connery films to split them up.
Live And Let Die
License to Kill - Bond’s American ally Felix Leiter loses his leg to a shark, like in the Live and Let Die novel
Die Another Day - Features an nobody-turned-rich English villain with deadly rockets/satellite as their weapon, like in the Moonraker novel
Diamonds Are Forever
From Russia With Love
Skyfall - Just to split up all the two previous and two next Connery films. Also both From Russia with Love and Skyfall were filmed in Istanbul.
Goldeneye - Literally just because the title has the word Gold in it
Quantum Of Solace
A View To A Kill
For Your Eyes Only
The Living Daylights
The Spy Who Loved Me
On Her Majesty's Secret Service
The World is Not Enough - Title is Bond’s family motto, which was mentioned in Majesty’s
You Only Live Twice
The Man With The Golden Gun
Tomorrow Never Dies - contains scenes filmed in Thailand, like The Man with the Golden Gun
Full Summary of Wade Keller's Huge Interview With AEW President Tony Khan
Tony says he feels "really, really great" and "well prepared" about their first episode.
Feels like they're getting amazing press. With the help of TNT/Warner Media, they've had advertising through podcasts, social media, Facebook ads, mainstream TV ads (NFL, HBO, "wrestling TV"), airports, movie theater trailers, etc.
Since watching the shows from gorilla, while also producing, is different from just watching the shows live, Tony makes sure to always watch the shows back (usually the next day), and plans to continue that for TV. Mentions that he watched Fight for the Fallen after he watched WWE Extreme Rules, and was "blown away by how much better our show was" and felt like that was one of AEW's weaker shows.
Says Double or Nothing is "the most commercially and critically successful wrestling pay-per-view" of the year. Cites doing over 110,000 buys at the price point they set, for their first ever show, while not having any TV to build it up. Happy with how well All Out did, despite the challenges of losing Jon Moxley to a MRSA infection 10 days before.
Top-5 issues he's had with their shows (in no particular order):
1. The Double or Nothing Casino Battle Royale started out flat, because they wanted to build towards a moment with MJF and Shawn Spears (that would factor into the future animosity between them), but the downside is that their first impression suffered because of it.
2. They could have (and were supposed to) handle the chairshot from Shawn Spears to Cody better, but it didn't go off as planned. Thankfully Cody was okay, and thought the Cody/Shawn Spears feud was fantastic.
3. The Hangman Page vs. Kip Sabian match should not have gone as long as it did. He regrets not having cut 5 minutes from it, plus it went 2 minutes longer than it was supposed to. Felt like it dragged, and didn't do anyone any favors (thinks it should have gone 12-13, not 17-19 minutes).
4. Losing Jon Moxley to MRSA, but think they handled that as well as they could. Really glad Jon's okay, and they're focused on Moxley vs Omega going forward.
5. Concedes that the Buy-In shows probably shouldn't have so much comedy when the main card is so serious.
As far as TV goes, you can still expect to see the arenas set up in a similar way, great wrestling matches, and a high production value. You probably won't see things like the Moxley vs Janela match.
Tonight's countdown special on TNT is designed to help introduce AEW to new viewers. They suspect that a lack of wrestling on Tuesday night (for the first time in a long time) will lead to viewers seeking out wrestling programming on TV.
While a lot of people will show up for a TV premiere, if you don't deliver then they might not show up for Week 2. He "wants Week 2 to be just as big of an event as Week 1, and Week 3 to be just as big as Week 1 and 2, and so forth." They're planning on "rolling out huge things every week."
Talks about the importance of Being the Elite - and how AEW wouldn't exist without it - despite it being a very different tone from AEW's shows. Says the "Road to" series will probably be more in-line with the tone they're going for for their shows. Says there's nothing wrong with having a sketch comedy show on YouTube, and a serious wrestling show on TV (which isn't to say that they'll never have comedic segments).
Doesn't want to insult people's intelligence. Against "invisible cameras" and doesn't want to rely on "DQ's," "ridiculous ref bumps," and "distraction roll-ups" too often.
His own personal wrestling influences are wide-ranging, dating as far back as the WWWF, and including Memphis, Mid-South, 90s New Japan and All Japan, and 2010s New Japan (references Kenny Omega, Prince Devitt, and Kota Ibushi). Says he shares common interests with Cody regarding Jim Crockett Promotions, WCW, and Mid-Atlantic; and common interests with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks with Japanese wrestling.
Even though "they all have different tastes in wrestling," they have a "similar mindset for what is good and what is bad." "90+% of the time" when one of them thinks they have a good idea, they all agree.
Hopes to grow the audience by putting on a great show, rather than trying to cater to specific demographics.
Designed to be more sports-based, but that doesn't mean they will lack drama (just like traditional sports aren't devoid of drama). Stories will stem from "wrestling in the ring," "personal issues," and "grudges" - with less focus on the "preposterous" and "ridiculous."
Wasn't surprised to see to see NXT go head-to-head with AEW on TV. Says that if AEW ran Tuesdays, he would have suspected NXT would move to that day (and says that arguably would have made more sense for NXT, since moving Smackdown to Fridays and potentially losing those Tuesday viewers).
While the shows will be wrestling-heavy, they will still have promos ("We have Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley: it would be insane not to let these guys talk") - "just not ridiculous, scripted promos."
Doesn't want to "over-produce" the commentary. While he has chimed in "a handful of times" for things to say - and while he regrets some things that have been said - he likes that it feels "real" and "organic."
Wants to have a show that's focused "in and around the ring" (compares to how the UFC is presented). Doesn't like so much focus on what's happening backstage.
Since the show is TV-14, they are being given more leeway and are being encouraged to be themselves and "be edgy."
In regards to WWE, they're not attempting to "counter-program" them or anything, but aren't above poking fun. They just don't want it to "become a habit" or "become a theme of the show." He was fine with Cody smashing the throne, because it came from his personal experiences. Says they're a "challenger brand," and while there isn't just one competitor, "there's one obvious competitor that we're always going to be compared to, for the foreseeable future." He doesn't think that's necessarily a bad thing, but actually a good thing - "especially after Monday."
Wants wrestlers to appear authentic. In regards to their characters, he doesn't want people to do things that they don't believe themselves. He's against writing dialogue for wrestlers, and thinks it can just result in them coming off as bad actors.
Says he's been "waiting for this moment for a really long time." In regards to the start date, he says that he's "known for a year and a half that this day is coming, and I could have told you that it was either going to be today or tomorrow." Cannot legally get into specifics, but says he has a "long-term," "multi-year" commitment with TNT.
In regards to wrestling being looked down upon by TNT in the past, he says that "absence makes the heart grow fonder." Says he was able to demonstrate factual numbers and patterns to say that "TNT had a big wrestling audience, and we can have one again. We're going to have one. We're going to have it tomorrow and we're going to have it a long time."
Committed to doing big, quarterly PPVs. Also interested in other big events (like the CEO-partnered Fyter Fest, and the charity fundraising Fight for the Fallen) that they can put out either through BRLive or streaming. Double or Nothing will always be held Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. All Out will always be held Labor Day weekend in the Chicago area. Full Gear has a chance to be the big, winter quarterly show (didn't necessarily seem to be as committed to the idea of it staying in the Baltimore area).
Says the ITV deal was not supposed to be announced (sounds very annoyed with this situation). They had replays scheduled for Sunday/Monday, "but they're still working on getting the show on earlier." He fully expects "this week" that they'll be up before that. It was just announced prematurely before everything was fully hammered out. "Hopefully stay tuned and we'll have some good news soon."
In regards to planning out TV, especially further down the line: "It's going to be way harder than we thought. It's going to be really hard, I know it's going to be, but it's not going to be the first time I've tried to do something I haven't done before. I think we have good aptitudes for this. I think it's going to be a challenge, and I don't expect it to be easy at all - believe me - but I do think we're going to pull it off and I think it's going to go great."
Agrees that wrestlers work best when they're amplified versions of their own personalities, but that's not necessarily always going to be the case (cites Kenny Omega's recent character change as not really being true to who Kenny is as a person).
Says that overall he's a lot less nervous with AEW than he is with the Jaguars or Fulham, because a lot more things are under his control.
In regards to keeping kayfabe on social media, says that he doesn't necessarily think it's a big deal and he trusts his performers to handle it well. He has had to talk to people a couple times in regards to bad things they've said on social media, but generally that isn't an issue. Says that could change a bit once they're doing weekly TV. Wade Keller seems to be of the mindset that wrestlers should always be "on," but Tony doesn't necessarily seem to agree (he gives the example of the media scrums not being done in kayfabe, and it being fine because it's clearly separate from the PPV).
As far as being wrestler-friendly, they'll have a relatively light schedule (every Wednesday this year, other than Christmas, plus Full Gear on a Saturday). Not everyone on the roster is going to be on every show - by design to give people time off and breaks for a healthier work/life balance. If it's a "reasonable request," he will allow wrestlers to work independent dates outside of AEW. They also have a tuition-matching program for people looking to get an education (says that he believes WWE also offers that, but it would be very difficult to work that around WWE's schedule), and some wrestlers are able to have careers outside of wrestling, as well (such as Britt Baker's dentistry, who he would never want to force to be on the road for 5 days out of the week). Many wrestlers also work various in-office position with AEW.
Doesn't want to be a "control freak," and is very open to feedback and suggestions from wrestlers. They try to have producers and coaches that are very agreeable guys to work with (cites Jerry Lynn and Dean Malenko), and he would rather say "yes" than "no" to a wrestler's idea.
In regards to AEW forcing WWE to make a better on-air product, he says "that is already clearly happening." "Yes, I do expect they will have to make some changes to their shows to accommodate some things that we're doing, like, for example pyro, I don't think it's a coincidence that pyro came back." "When there's a competitive wrestling market it's better for the fans, it's definitely better for the wrestlers, and I think it's better for the companies, too, because the competition not only brings the best out of both companies, but the market it creates - let's face it, people are very excited with what's going on between AEW and WWE."
Wants to do with the women's division what WCW did with the cruiserweight division: notably with the joshi and how they interact with the western women.
Thinks his roster is as good as what any other brand has on TV in regards to in-ring skill and personality.
In regards to the recent RAW ending, "if people like that: great. It seemed like a lot of people didn't, but I'm sure there's some people that did, and I don't begrudge those people for liking it. Different people like different things in wrestling - everyone's entitled to their opinion." Goes on to say that he would never ban anyone from the arena for wearing a wrestling shirt from another promotion, and just thinks it's cool that you're wearing a wrestling shirt, period.
Defining success, he says that it's more subjective with AEW than his other sports teams. They've set benchmarks, internal targets, and network targets as goals. "I would like for this show to have a good audience and for this show to be on for many years. I would like to make the wrestling business a better place, as we've already done in 2019, I'd still like to be doing that in the future." "I would like for us to be a profitable company. I expect to make back everything I've invested and then some. When we're making profits it'll be that much sweeter."
No plans for house shows this year, and when they do start doing them it will not be every weekend. Never wants to be running 5-6 days a week. He'd "like to settle into doing somewhere between 85 and 125 dates a year... but again, every person doesn't need to be on every show, and I don't really see why anyone would be wrestling 100 times a year or more, for us."
